Adventures of a Girl's Weekend

This week Kara and I had an adventure together. We took our first train ride to Salt Lake for a girl’s weekend with my mom and sister, Alicia (aka Grandma and Aunt Alicia). The trip started off rough Wednesday as the train was delayed both in leaving Reno and getting to Salt Lake. It made the overnight ride a challenge for my Karabear. She would just doze off to sleep when the train would stop to let a train go by in the opposite direction. Needless to say, it made what was to be a ten hour train ride long and last twelve hours. For a sixth month old and her mom, the twelve hours couldn’t have ended quickly enough.

Once in Salt Lake we shopped getting a cute Easter dress for Kara and a few spring time clothes and helped Alicia shop for her new apartment. Alicia is so proud of her new apartment and she should be! Getting to be there for her and offer her advice on how to decorate the apartment was almost an honor. In the fact that she trusts me with helping her with that.

More enjoyable than the shopping was the bonding that took place; Kara got the chance to bond with her Grandma. At one point mom offered to watch Kara who was sleeping so Alicia and I could go shopping, 30 minutes later my phone rang – it was my mom and in the background there was the all too familiar cry of a very unhappy Kara. Mom had tried everything she could think of, but Kara was not having it and would not settle down. Alicia and I finished what we were doing and got back to her apartment as quickly as we could. We walked in to find Kara happily playing with a bathroom paper cup; singing, toys, clean diapers, walking around, even a bathroom mirror would not calm her, it was a bathroom paper cup – crazy baby!!

Kara bonded with Alicia who loved to get down on the floor playing with her which Kara enjoyed. Alicia would also volunteer to carry Kara anywhere we went which was a great help to me. Alicia was also way more willing than I to offer Kara her hair to eat and play with. Which, Kara loved.

In addition to Kara bonding with my mom and Alicia I had the chance to strengthen my bonds with each of them. Along with decorating advice we talked about boys, relationships, marriage, children, life and shared stories of the past. For me, the weekend was perfect with just those moments.

We added food into the weekend which always makes things better. Alicia cooked dinner one night and breakfast consisting of mom’s homemade waffle’s one day for us. We also went to the Lion House restaurant in Brigham Young’s home in downtown Salt Lake. I had never been there and that food was just DELISH, absolutely great home cooking. We took advantage of our time downtown to enjoy Temple Square, but since it was chilly outside we went to the top of the Joseph Smith memorial building to look over Temple Square and enjoy the scenery instead of trying to fight the cold.

That night we went to Uncle Charles’ for dinner where Kara met a new friend. Kara fell in love with their dog Sammie. The two shared kisses, Sammie let Kara pet him and even ride him!! Now I believe Kara is on a mission to do the same to our cats. They’d better watch out!

There is little more I could ask for in regards to a great girl’s weekend. We ate good food, shopped, and grew closer together. All the while, my beautiful daughter was showered with love from her Grandma, Aunt, Uncle Matthew (who got to play with her while we were at dinner at Uncle Charles’), and Aunt Roxane among others.

(This picture doesn't really follow the storyline of the trip, but it's a cute one of Kara "driving" in Salt Lake)

Coming home ended up being ten times better than the trip out. Kara had not been feeling well so we upgraded to a sleeper car on the train and it was SOOO much better. Kara had room to roll around; we could lie down together on the bed and actually get some rest.

Of course, once we got home, Kara’s eyes lit up for her dad who in her eyes has hung the moon, stars, and the sun. Watching the two of them play together was the perfect ending to a great weekend.

I did walk away from this weekend with a new mission in mind. I want to take away from my business life the mentality I had of “Jack of all trades, Master of none” and apply it to my new life as a homemaker and stay at home mom. I want to become a Jack of all trades with my cooking, baking, cleaning, sewing, crocheting, scrapbooking, blogging, gardening, and canning (this list is likely to change and grow, but this is where I’m starting…). Wish me luck!!
